South Hero is the southernmost of the Lake Champlain Islands, a farming and lake town of about 1,700 people reached by Route 2 from the Vermont mainland or by ferry from Plattsburgh, New York. It is a slow place: orchards, a rail-trail causeway out into the lake, a state park beach and a handful of places to eat. It works as a one-night stop on a Vermont run or a low-key weekend from Burlington, 30–40 minutes away by car.

Get around
A car is close to essential: sights are spread along Route 2 and West Shore Road, and side roads are often dirt. Bikes work well on the quiet paved roads and the Island Line Trail. The Lake Champlain Ferries crossing from Plattsburgh, NY lands at Grand Isle, a short drive north.
