Sleep in one beach city and drive; the 405 is the bottleneck, so pick a base near what you came for.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
The South Bay is the coastal strip of Los Angeles County between LAX and the Port of Los Angeles: Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, El Segundo, Gardena, Carson, San Pedro and Wilmington. It is not one destination — it is a set of towns 10–25 minutes apart by car, each with a different job. Sleep in a beach city for sand and walkable evenings, in Torrance for value and parking, in San Pedro for the port and Catalina ferries. A car makes the region easy; without one you are limited to the beach cities and the Metro Green Line.

- Beach cities only: Manhattan Beach + Hermosa + Redondo on foot and by short drive
- 3 nights
- Beach base 2 nights + San Pedro half-day for the waterfront and Catalina ferry check
- 4 nights
- Beach base 3 nights + one day to Catalina Island by ferry from San Pedro or Long Beach
- Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach in one day is three pier areas and a lot of parking — pick two.
- The 405 and 110 are slow at commute hours; a 10-mile drive can take 40 minutes.
- Beach parking fills by mid-morning on summer weekends; arrive early or use a paid lot.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Catalina Island | San Pedro | 90 min | check | Ferries run from San Pedro and Long Beach; book ahead in summer and check the last return. |

| Inglewood | El Segundo | 20 min | unknown | Arena and stadium events; traffic spikes on event nights. |
| Long Beach | Torrance | 35 min | unknown | Aquarium and Queen Mary; planned page. |
Bags between cities
Beach-city hotels are 15–40 minutes from LAX by car; luggage storage at the hotel is the usual fix for a late flight. No rail link runs into the terminals — allow a buffer at commute hours.
