Souillac

Half a day: see the cliffs at Gris Gris, walk the Telfair Garden, then drive to Rochester Falls or La Vanille. Not a base unless you want quiet.

Souillac is a small south-coast village with a rugged coastline, a colonial garden and a waterfall. The main draw is Gris Gris, the only cliff-top viewpoint on Mauritius' otherwise flat south shore. Most visitors stop for an hour or two on the way to or from Chamarel, Bel Ombre or Blue Bay.

Get around

Car essential. Buses run along the B9 coast road but are infrequent. Taxis from Souillac to Bel Ombre or Chamarel cost about MUR 800–1200 (check).

  • Greeting: Handshake; 'bonzour' first; avoid: Skipping greetings in shops
  • Religious sites: Cover up and remove shoes; avoid: Leather items in some temples
  • Beach: Swimwear on the sand only; avoid: Topless sunbathing

Scams and watch-outs

  • Gris Gris has no barriers: stay well back from the cliff edge, especially in wet or windy weather.
  • Rochester Falls access is via a rough dirt road; a sedan can manage in dry conditions, but a 4x4 is safer after rain.
  • La Vanille Nature Park is about 8 km north of Souillac, not walkable.

Souillac is safe. The only real risk is the unfenced cliff at Gris Gris: keep children close and don't walk near the edge in strong wind or after rain.
