Sosúa
Base in Sosúa for 2–3 nights if you want a walkable north-coast beach town with cheap food; skip it if you want quiet — the main strip is a party strip.
Sosúa is a small north-coast town in Puerto Plata province, about 10 minutes from Puerto Plata airport (POP) and 15 minutes from Cabarete. Playa Sosúa is a 1 km bay with a row of beach shacks; El Batey is the tourist side, Los Charamicos the local side. It is walkable, cheap by Caribbean standards, and known for its nightlife on Calle Pedro Clisante. Two or three nights covers the beach, one excursion and a Cabarete day. The town was settled by Jewish refugees from Europe in the early 1940s, and a small synagogue and museum remain near Casa Marina.

Get around
The centre is walkable. Motoconcho (motorcycle taxi) within El Batey is about RD$20 by day and RD$40 at night — agree the fare before you get on. Guaguas (minivans) run the main highway between Puerto Plata and Río San Juan: Sosúa–Cabarete about RD$20–30, Sosúa–Puerto Plata about RD$30. Tourist taxis cost far more: Sosúa–Cabarete around US$15–20, Sosúa–POP airport around US$25 per car, not per person. Car rental from about US$30/day before insurance.

- Greeting: Handshake; kiss on the cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping hellos
- Dress: Long trousers in offices, churches, some clubs; avoid: Swimwear off the beach
- Time: Allow flexibility; avoid: Expecting punctual starts socially
- Dominoes: Watch and ask to join; avoid: Interrupting a game
Scams and watch-outs
- Propinas: men who offer to find you a restaurant, bar or beach chair earn a hidden commission added to your bill. Say no if you already know where you are going.
- Never change money through a propina or a beach vendor — use a signed exchange office or bank.
- Do not ride a motoconcho if you have been drinking.
- Los Charamicos alleys are unsafe, especially at night; the main streets are fine by day.
- Beach and souvenir vendors open at two to six times the local price. Offer what you want to pay and walk away.
- Cuban-name cigars are often Dominican-made, and fakes are common at beach stalls; buy boxes from a factory or a shop you trust and inspect the contents.
Sosúa is a small town with a big nightlife strip: petty theft and overcharging are the real risks, not violence. Keep to the main streets in Los Charamicos after dark, use hotel safes, and treat unsolicited 'help' as a sales pitch.
