Sossusvlei
Stay 2 nights inside the Sesriem gate to reach the dunes at sunrise; day-trippers from outside arrive after the gate opens and miss it.
Sossusvlei is a clay pan between red dunes in the Namib Sand Sea, part of Namib-Naukluft National Park. The settlement is Sesriem, 65 km from the dunes, and the gate opens at sunrise and closes at sunset. Only guests of the two NWR camps inside the gate can be at the dunes before the gate opens. Two nights is the working minimum: one for the dunes at sunrise, one for Sesriem Canyon and the drive out.

Scams and watch-outs
- Gate opens at sunrise and closes at sunset: no night driving in the park.
- The last 5 km to Sossusvlei is deep soft sand. Do not attempt it without 4x4 experience; recovery is expensive.
- No fuel, water or food between Sesriem and the dunes: carry 3–4 L of water per person.
- Summer midday heat is dangerous; walk dunes before 10:00 or after 16:00.
- Permits are checked at the gate; buy at the park office just inside Sesriem.
- Cell signal is patchy to absent in the park.
