Treat Sorong as a transit night, not a destination: fly in, sleep near the port, take the 14:00 ferry to Waisai the next day.
Sorong is the gateway to Raja Ampat and the largest city on the Bird's Head peninsula of Papua. Almost everyone passes through: land at Dominique Edward Osok (SOQ), sleep once, then take the two-hour ferry to Waisai. Give the city itself a half day for the waterfront and the taro-chip shops, and only stay longer if a flight or ferry has failed.

Scams and watch-outs
- The Denpasar–Sorong "direct" flight is usually rerouted via Jakarta as of 2026: check the routing, not the booking-site label.
- Getting to Sorong often needs two or three connections; build a buffer night before any Raja Ampat boat.
- Ferry times to Waisai are fixed and limited: 14:00 daily, plus 09:00 on Mon–Wed–Fri; miss it and you lose a day.
- Agree taksi and ojek fares before boarding; meters are not standard.
- Malaria is present in Papua: check prophylaxis with a travel clinic before you fly.
Sorong is a working port city, not a resort: petty theft happens around markets and the port at night, so keep bags zipped and take taksi after dark. The bigger risks are sea conditions on the Waisai crossing and malaria in the region.
