Soria
Give Soria one night, two if you want Numantia and San Baudelio: the Romanesque core is a half-day walk, the outlying sights need a car.
Soria is a small provincial capital of about 40,000 people on the Duero's upper reaches, kept off the main rail and motorway lines. Its draw is a dense set of 12th- and 13th-century Romanesque churches, a walkable old centre and two Roman-era sites outside town. It works as a quiet one- or two-night stop between Madrid, Logroño and Zaragoza, not as a base for a whole trip.

Get around
The centre is compact and flat enough to walk: Plaza Mayor to the Concatedral is about 5 minutes, and San Saturio is reached over a footbridge. Six local bus routes (Avanza) cover the rest of town, and taxis are cheap. For Numantia, San Baudelio and the province's villages you need a car or a taxi arranged in advance.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Two kisses on the cheek (right then left) between friends and when introduced socially; handshake in business; avoid: Being stiff — Spaniards stand close and touch arms
- Meal times: Late lunch and dinner; long sobremesa (chat after eating); avoid: Rushing to leave or asking for the bill with the last bite
- Noise: Join in the lively conversation; avoid: Reading loud voices as anger
- Siesta hours: Keep noise down in residential buildings 15:00–17:00 and after 23:00; avoid: Phone calls to people at lunch time
- Dress: Smart casual in cities; locals rarely wear shorts in Madrid in town; avoid: Swimwear or bare torsos away from the beach
- Regional pride: Ask about local dishes and festivals; avoid: Assuming Catalan or Basque are dialects of Spanish
Scams and watch-outs
- Only two trains a day reach Soria, about 3 h from Madrid Chamartín: check the timetable before you build a plan around it.
- The bus station on Av Constitución was under rebuilding, with services stopping on the street: confirm your departure point.
- The Concatedral de San Pedro has been closed for long stretches; the cloister costs a small fee when it is open.
- Outlying sights such as San Baudelio keep short, split hours and close on Mondays: check before driving out.
Soria is a low-crime provincial town and feels calm at night. The real risks are winter ice on the pavements, summer heat in the middle of the day, and unlit roads if you drive out to the Romanesque villages after dark.
