Sorel-Tracy
Give Sorel-Tracy one full day plus a night: the riverfront, Biophare and the Governors' House are a half-day, and the Grèves park needs the rest.
Sorel-Tracy sits where the Richelieu River meets the St. Lawrence, about 80 km northeast of Montréal, and it works as a one-night stop on a Québec road trip rather than a destination in itself. The draw is water: the riverfront, the islands, the bird migration and the Des Grèves regional park. Two nights is enough to see the town and walk the park without rushing.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Most trips need a car: buses are thin and taxis are limited outside the centre.
- The Sorel–Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola ferry is seasonal and weather-dependent; check the day's sailings before you commit.
- Restaurant kitchens in town often close by 21:00; eat earlier than you would in Montréal.
- Winter ice and snow make the riverfront and park paths slippery; the park may be closed or unplowed.
Sorel-Tracy is a small, quiet town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are winter ice on the riverfront, unlit park paths after dark and deer or wildlife on the roads outside town.
