Sopron
Go for one night to see the Baroque centre; add a second if you want wine hills or Lake Fertő. It is a compact border town 70 min from Vienna.
Sopron sits 60 km from Vienna and 220 km from Budapest, so most travellers reach it from Austria, not Hungary. The walled centre is small enough to walk in half a day: Firewatch Tower, Fő tér, the medieval synagogues on Új utca. Add a second night only for the Sopron wine region or Lake Fertő. Trains run hourly to Vienna and roughly hourly to Győr; Budapest needs a change or a long direct run.

Get around
The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Local buses cover the outer districts; buy tickets in advance or from the driver. Parking is zoned and the core is largely closed to cars.
