Somerset West sits between the N2 and the Helderberg mountain, 45–50 km east of central Cape Town and about 20 minutes from Stellenbosch. It is a residential town with two serious wine estates at its edge, a mountain reserve above it, and the beaches of Strand and Gordon's Bay 10 minutes away. Most travellers use it as a quieter, cheaper base for the eastern Winelands and False Bay, not as a sightseeing destination in itself.
