Sombrerete
Give Sombrerete one night, two at most: a colonial mining town on the Camino Real, walkable in half a day, with Sierra de Órganos as the reason to stay longer.
Sombrerete is a colonial silver town of about 25,000 people in Zacatecas state, 168 km from Zacatecas city, and part of the UNESCO Camino Real de Tierra Adentro listing. Its historic centre is small and walkable, with 16th- to 18th-century churches around the plaza. Travellers come for the architecture, the Pueblo Mágico label and the rock formations of Sierra de Órganos National Park, which need a car or a taxi. One night covers the town; add a second if you want the park.

Get around
The centro is flat and walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end; Av. Hidalgo and the plaza hold most of the sights. For Sierra de Órganos and the outlying chapels you need a taxi or your own car; agree the fare or the hourly rate before you set off.
