Give Solvang one night, two at most: the walkable Danish core is a half day, and the rest of your time belongs to Santa Ynez Valley wineries.
Solvang is a small Santa Ynez Valley town of about 5,200 people, built by Danish immigrants from 1911 and restyled as a Danish village after World War II. The core is four or five walkable blocks of bakeries, windmills and half-timbered fronts on Mission Drive (Route 246). It works as a one-night stop on a Highway 101 or Route 154 drive between Santa Barbara and the wine country, not as a multi-day base on its own.

Downtown is compact and flat: walk it. A car is the practical way to reach wineries, Los Olivos, Buellton and the mission; parking in town is free. Santa Ynez Valley Transit covers the valley Monday–Saturday, with dial-a-ride on Sunday. Surrey bikes can be rented in the core.
