Soja is a small Okayama Prefecture city on the JR Kibi and Hakubi lines, 15–25 minutes and ¥240–500 from Okayama or Kurashiki. Its draw is the Kibiji District Cycling Trail: a flat 15 km route linking Bitchu Kokubunji's five-story pagoda, two burial mounds, Soja Shrine and Iyama Hofukuji. Most travellers ride it as a half day from Okayama; a night here only makes sense if you want to start the trail early or climb to Kinojo Castle.

Get around
Bicycles are the way to see the sights: rent just outside Soja Station for ¥300 for two hours or ¥1,000 for the day. The Kibiji trail is flat and signposted both ways, and you can drop the bike at Bizen Ichinomiya Station. Local buses from Soja Station reach Bitchu Kokubunji and Kinojo Castle, but run infrequently; check timetables before you rely on them.

Scams and watch-outs
- Buses to Kinojo Castle and Bitchu Kokubunji are few: check the timetable before you set out.
- The Kibiji trail is exposed; carry water and sun cover from June to September.
- Rural Okayama is cash-friendly: many small shops and the bike counter may not take cards.
- Last trains back to Okayama run before midnight; check the JR Kibi and Hakubi line times.
Rural and calm; the real risks are heat on the exposed trail, sparse buses, and cycling on roads shared with cars. Standard Japan precautions apply.
