Give Socorro one night as a Bosque del Apache or Very Large Array stop, not a base: the town itself is half a day, the draws are 20–60 mi out.
Socorro is a town of about 9,000 on I-25 between Albuquerque and Las Cruces, built on a short mining boom and now anchored by New Mexico Tech and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. Almost everything worth the detour sits outside town: the Bosque del Apache refuge 20 mi south, the Very Large Array 60 mi west, the Trinity Site open one day a year. Come for one night in crane season or as a break in the drive, and bring a car.

Get around
You need a car. The motel strip sprawls along California Avenue and the stores sit well away from the Tech campus, and every real attraction is 15–60 mi out. The refuge road is fine for cycling but narrow and shared with fast traffic; the Langmuir road in the Magdalena Mountains is rough and may want 4-wheel drive.

Socorro is a small, low-crime town and the usual risks are environmental: summer heat, monsoon flash floods on back roads, long empty drives with no gas or cell signal. Lock the car at trailheads and tell someone your route west of Magdalena.
