Sønderborg is a small harbour town on Als, 30 km from the German border, built around a waterfront castle and the 1864 battlefields just west of town. Two nights covers the castle, Dybbøl and a walk along the sound; a third night only pays off if you want the Gendarmstien coastal path or a Flensburg shopping run. It is a summer town: the castle and the history centre keep shorter hours from October to March.

- Wind off the sound makes the waterfront feel several degrees colder than the forecast.
