Useful apps for Slovakia: transport, maps, translation

Slovakia's app needs are narrow. Trains are the backbone of most trips, so ZSSK's app is the one you will open most: timetables, seat reservations and e-tickets for the state network, including the Bratislava–Košice route and the mountain lines to Poprad and the High Tatras. RegioJet and Leo Express sell their own tickets on the same corridor, often cheaper if you book ahead; each has its own app or mobile site, and a ZSSK ticket is not valid on their trains.

In cities, Bolt is the ride-hailing app you will find working in Bratislava and Košice. Uber does not operate in Slovakia (check), so do not count on it. Local taxi firms exist but app-based booking is simpler and shows the fare up front. For public transport inside Bratislava and Košice, paper or SMS tickets and contactless cards are common; a dedicated city app is not essential for a short visit.

Google Maps handles driving, walking and much of the rail network well, and its transit layer covers Bratislava and Košice reasonably. For hiking, download offline maps before you leave signal: coverage is patchy in deep valleys and on high trails. The HZS mountain rescue app is worth installing if you hike the High Tatras — it can send your location to rescuers, and mountain rescue in Slovakia is not free in every case.

For language, Slovak is not close enough to English for most travellers to read menus or signs cold. A translation app with offline Slovak downloaded covers menus, tickets and pharmacy labels. English is widely spoken in Bratislava hotels and by younger staff, but less so in small towns and villages, so keep the app handy.

Money and connectivity apps matter less than the basics. Cards are accepted almost everywhere in cities, so a banking app for card controls is enough; carry some cash for small mountain huts and rural shops. If you use an eSIM, install it before you fly and test it at the airport; local prepaid SIMs from Orange, Telekom, O2 and 4ka are sold in shops and malls.
