Slavonice
Go for one night, not as a day trip: 2 h 15 min by car from Prague, 3 h by bus, and the Renaissance square is quietest in the evening.
Slavonice is a small South Bohemian border town, about 2,300 people, with more than 50 Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque houses around two squares. It sits 1.2 km from Austria and was bypassed by later trade routes, which is why the centre survived. Public transport is slow and indirect, so most visitors come by car and stay one night.

Get around
On foot. The centre is small and flat; the ceramics and textile workshop on Horní náměstí is in the town itself, while the fortification trail and the Maříž village branch are the only reasons to use a bike or car.

Scams and watch-outs
- Public transport is slow: Prague buses stop often and take about 3 h; from České Budějovice you change in Jindřichův Hradec or Dačice, about 2 h 15 min to 3 h 10 min.
- There is no train connection from Austria; the border is 1.2 km away, so check locally how you can cross on foot or by bike.
- The historic underground is not for claustrophobics and outside July–August runs by arrangement only.
- The fortification museum opens weekends in May, June and September, daily in July and August; the outdoor trail is always open.
Very safe for its size; the real issues are a thin winter sightseeing offer, unlit roads and paths after dark, and deer or cyclists on the border lanes if you drive at night.
