Skopje is a morning-and-evening city: the fortress and the Old Bazaar before 11:00, an indoor middle of the day, and the square and the bridge at dusk; in summer heat and in winter smog change the plan.
Skopje is compact but split in two by the Vardar river: the Ottoman Old Bazaar on the north bank, the rebuilt Macedonia Square and its statues on the south. The trips that go wrong walk the bazaar at 14:00 in July, arrive late without a booked transfer, or plan an outdoor week in a smoggy January. Four clusters cover a first visit: the Old Bazaar, Macedonia Square and the Stone Bridge, the Debar Maalo restaurant quarter, and Bit Pazar market. Ohrid is a separate base, not a day trip.
