Skara
Half a day is enough for the cathedral and a walk through the old centre; add a full day if you want Skara Sommarland or Lake Hornborga for birdwatching.
Skara is a small town in Västergötland with one of Scandinavia's oldest cathedrals, a summer amusement park and a famous crane-watching lake nearby. Most travellers pass through on the E20 between Gothenburg and Stockholm, stopping for a meal and a look at the cathedral. It is not a base, but a short stop or a family day-trip.

Scams and watch-outs
- Skara Sommarland is open only in summer (mid-May to mid-August, check exact dates).
- Lake Hornborga is best for crane-watching in March–April and September–October; the rest of the year it is a quiet lake.
- Most shops and restaurants close early outside summer; check opening hours.
Skara is very safe. The main risks are cold in winter and the occasional pickpocket in summer crowds at Sommarland.
