Silver Spring is an unincorporated edge city in Montgomery County, Maryland, sitting right on the northeast border of Washington, DC. Its downtown is compact and walkable, rebuilt around an outdoor plaza with a 1938 art-deco cinema, a music hall, breweries and one of the largest Ethiopian restaurant clusters in the US. The Red Line runs straight into DC in about 25 minutes, which makes it a cheaper bed for a DC trip and a decent half-day on its own.

Get around
Downtown is small enough to cross on foot in 15 minutes. The Red Line at 8400 Colesville Rd is the workhorse: about 25 min to Metro Center in DC. Metrobus and Ride On cover the county; a free downtown shuttle loops the core on weekdays. Bikeshare docks sit near the plaza. A car is only worth it for the parks and the Seminary.
