Silver City is an old mining town at about 1,800 m in the mountains of southwest New Mexico, and the practical base for the Gila Cliff Dwellings and the Gila Wilderness. Get around
Downtown is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. For everything else you need a car: there is no useful local bus, and the Gila Cliff Dwellings road (NM 15) is narrow and winding. Fill the tank in town before heading north.
