Siegburg
Base here only if you want a quiet, cheaper bed 25 min from Bonn and 26 km from Cologne; otherwise day-trip the old town and abbey in 3–4 hours.
Siegburg is a small Rhineland town on the Sieg and Agger rivers, 10 km from Bonn and 26 km from Cologne, and a stop on the Cologne–Frankfurt high-speed line. Its draw is compact: a cobbled old town, Michaelsberg Abbey on its 118 m hill, a ceramics museum and a medieval-style Christmas market in December. Most travellers pass through; a night makes sense if you want a cheaper, calmer base for Bonn and the Cologne Lowland.

Get around
The centre is walkable: station to market square is about 5–10 min on foot. The S66 tram links Siegburg to Bonn in about 25 min, and the S12 commuter train runs to Troisdorf and Cologne roughly every 20 min. Buses leave from the station forecourt to Bonn, Troisdorf and Hennef. Taxis wait in front of the station.
