Siddharthanagar (also written Bhairahawa) is a Terai plains city of about 70,000 people, 265 km west of Kathmandu and 3 km from the Indian border at Sunauli. It exists for travellers as a gateway: to Lumbini 22 km away, to the Kapilvastu archaeological sites, and to India overland. The city itself has a weekly bazaar, brassware and cheap hotels; most people pass through in a night.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk. Rickshaws are the local short-hop option and are priced by time (about Rs 2 per minute). Unmetered taxis wait at the main intersections and expect bargaining. Bicycles work well for the flat roads out to Lumbini and the villages.

- Temples and stupas: Walk clockwise, spin prayer wheels clockwise, shoes off at shrines; avoid: Touching offerings; entering Hindu-only areas
- Food: Right hand, accept refills gracefully; avoid: Sharing food you have bitten; stepping over food
- Feet and heads: Keep feet flat and away from people and altars; avoid: Touching anyone's head
- Photos: Ask first; offer to show the picture; avoid: Photographing cremations or rituals without permission
- On the trail: Pass mani walls and chortens on the left (keeping them on your right); give way to yaks on the mountain side; avoid: Standing on the drop side when animals pass
Scams and watch-outs
- Border scams are reported at Sunauli: use official immigration counters, keep your own bags and refuse unsolicited 'helpers'.
- Summer heat reaches 35–38 °C; plan walking and cycling for early morning.
- Monsoon rain runs June into September and rural roads to Ramagram and Kapilvastu can be rough.
- Hotel and taxi prices are often quoted in dollars and are negotiable; agree the total before you commit.
Generally calm for a border city, but Sunauli is the risk point: use official immigration, ignore touts and keep bags with you. Heat and monsoon are the other real hazards.
