Shrewsbury
Amwythig
Give Shrewsbury one full day and one night: the medieval centre, castle and river loop are all walkable from the station in under 15 minutes.
Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire and a compact, walkable market town on a loop of the River Severn, 9 miles from the Welsh border. Almost everything worth seeing sits inside a 15-minute walk of the railway station, so it works as a single overnight stop or a base for Ironbridge, Ludlow and the Shropshire Hills. Two nights lets you add a day trip without rushing.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Park & Ride does not run on Sundays or bank holidays — check before relying on it.
- On-street parking in the centre is limited and expensive; use a council car park or Park & Ride.
- The Quarry park is best avoided after dark.
- Some attractions close in winter — check opening days before travelling.
- Shrewsbury Town play at New Meadow, 2 miles south of the centre; check fixtures if you want a match.
Shrewsbury is a low-crime town and the centre is safe to walk by day. The real issues are the river after dark, weekend drinkers around Mardol and Bridge Street, and unlit paths along the Severn loop.
