One night at most: see Komine Castle and Nanko Park, then move on. Skip it if you are not already on the Tohoku Shinkansen line.
Shirakawa is the southernmost city in Fukushima's Nakadori, about 90 minutes from Tokyo on the Tohoku Shinkansen. It is a former castle town with a reconstructed keep, a lakeside garden and a barrier-gate site tied to the poet Basho. Most travellers use it as a one-night stop or a break between Tokyo and Sendai, not as a destination in itself.

Get around
The town is small but spread out; a loop takes about an hour by car. Buses and taxis wait outside both Shirakawa and Shinshirakawa stations, and there is a JR car rental office at Shinshirakawa. On foot, Komine Castle is about 5 minutes from Shirakawa station.

- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Shinshirakawa (Shinkansen) and Shirakawa (local line) are separate stations: check which one your hotel is near.
- Many restaurants and bars close early; last orders can be before 21:00.
- The Chochin Matsuri lantern festival runs 13–15 September in odd-numbered years only; check dates before planning around it.
A quiet, low-crime rural city; the real risks are winter ice on pavements, early-closing restaurants and the gap between the two stations at night.
