Shirakawa-gō
白川郷
Go for one night, not a day trip: buses arrive around 10:00 and leave by 16:00, so day visitors see the same street in the same crush.
Shirakawa-gō is a UNESCO-listed village of gasshō-zukuri farmhouses in Gifu, where steep thatched roofs shed heavy snow and the attics once held silkworms. Ogimachi, the main hamlet, is walkable in about two hours. The reason to sleep here is the evening and early morning, when the coaches are gone and the village is quiet.

Get around
Ogimachi is small and flat: walk it. Anything outside the main hamlet, such as Hirase Onsen or the Shiramizu area, needs a car, and many mountain roads close in winter. Buses stop at the Shirakawa-gō Bus Terminal, a few minutes on foot from the farmhouses.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Coin lockers at the bus terminal fill early; overflow storage behind the station also fills, and you may end up carrying your bags.
- The winter light-up is ticketed and limited to a few nights; not all tickets include the Shiroyama Viewpoint, and viewpoint slots are timed — miss yours and it is gone.
- Smoking is restricted to marked spots: the buildings are thatch and timber, and a stray cigarette butt means police involvement.
- Most restaurants and shops shut after dark; the village is built around day visitors.
- Winter mountain roads close after snow; check bus status before you travel.
Very safe for tourists; the real risks are winter ice and snow on the slopes, closed mountain roads, and fire rules around the thatched houses. Keep to marked smoking spots.
