Go for one night in Jul–Aug if you want a beach; otherwise skip — the ferry and the single restaurant make a day trip thin.

Shiraishi is a Seto Inland Sea island of about 350 people, part of Kasaoka in Okayama Prefecture. It is a summer island: a public beach, sea kayaking and windsurfing, a free beach campsite and the Shiraishi Odori dance on 14–16 August. Outside July and August most facilities shut and the island is a quiet walk.

Get around

Walk or cycle: the island is about 6 km around and can be crossed end to end in under an hour. There is no public transport on the island and no reason to bring a car.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
  • Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
  • Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
  • Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
  • Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
  • Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
  • Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
  • Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope

Scams and watch-outs

  • Ferries are limited and the last boat back to Kasaoka leaves in the evening: check the Sanyo Kisen timetable before you commit to a day trip.
  • San-chan's is the only real restaurant; it opens Jul–Aug and may close early on weeknights unless you call ahead.
  • Self-caterers should buy food in Kasaoka — the supermarket is next to the ferry terminal and train station.
  • Most guesthouses take cash; the only ATM is at the post office during business hours.
  • Mobile coverage is fine on major carriers; free Wi-Fi is at the port and some lodgings.

Very safe. The real risks are the last ferry, summer heat and swimming without a lifeguard: check the timetable and the sea conditions before you swim.
