Shimanto City
四万十市
One night is enough to cycle the river, see a chinkabashi bridge and visit the castle; a half-day stop if you are driving Shikoku's south coast.
Shimanto City sits on the Shimanto River, called the last clearwater river in Japan. Its main draws are the submersible chinkabashi bridges (no railings, no supports — they sink when the river rises), the reconstructed Nakamura Castle and the Yasunami waterwheels. The area is rural, slow and best explored by bicycle or car. Most travellers use it as a quiet stop between Kochi City and Cape Ashizuri.

Get around
Bicycle is the best way: rent one at the station or at your guesthouse. The riverbank and bridges are flat. A car makes the outlying bridges and waterwheels easier. Local buses run a few times a day; check the timetable.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Chinkabashi bridges have no railings — do not cycle or walk near the edge when the river is high.
- Restaurants close early (by 20:00) and many are closed one day a week; check ahead.
- Buses are infrequent: if you miss the last one, a taxi from Shimanto City to Kochi City costs about ¥15,000.
Very safe. The main risks are cycling on narrow roads with no shoulder and the lack of railings on chinkabashi bridges. Watch for snakes near the river in summer.
