Shijiazhuang is Hebei's capital and one of China's biggest rail junctions, about an hour from Beijing by high-speed train. The city itself is young and industrial; the draw is what sits around it — the walled town and pagodas of Zhengding 15 km north, the 7th-century Zhaozhou Bridge, and mountain temples. Two nights covers the core; add a night if you want Cangyan Mountain.
