Shibata is a former castle town on the northern Echigo Plain, about 25 minutes by train from Niigata City. Its draw is compact and specific: a surviving castle gate and turret, a small garden with old soldier barracks, and Tsukioka Onsen, a hot-spring village 20 minutes away by bus. There is no big-ticket sight here, so it works as a quiet night on the Niigata-to-Murakami line rather than a destination in itself.

Get around
The JR Uetsu Main Line links Shibata with Niigata and Murakami; the station is the transport hub. The castle, Shimizu-en garden and the station sit within about 20–25 minutes' walk of each other, so the centre is walkable. Buses run to Tsukioka Onsen from Toyosaka Station; taxis are the fallback for the Ichishima Residence and outlying sights.
