Use Sherwood Park as a cheaper bed beside Edmonton, not as a sightseeing base: 1 night, or 2 if you want Elk Island National Park on the way east.
Sherwood Park is a suburban community of about 72,000 people inside Strathcona County, immediately east of Edmonton on Highway 16. It has no old town and no headline sight: its value is hotel rooms that often undercut downtown Edmonton, free parking, and a 20-minute drive to Elk Island National Park. Come for a bed and a car, not for a destination.

Get around
A car is the practical answer: the county is spread out and the rest of Strathcona County is not workable on foot.
