Shepherdsville
Shepherdsville, Kentucky
Give Shepherdsville one night as a cheap I-65 base south of Louisville, or skip it and sleep in Louisville itself.
Shepherdsville is a Bullitt County seat of about 11,000 people on I-65, 20 mi (32 km) south of Louisville and 15 mi (24 km) from Louisville International Airport. It is a motel-and-outlet stop, not a sightseeing town: the reasons to sleep here are lower room rates, free parking and quick interstate access to Louisville, Bernheim Forest and the bourbon distilleries near Clermont and Cox's Creek. Two nights is the useful maximum.

Get around
A car is effectively required: sights sit 5–15 mi apart on country roads with no useful bus network. I-65 runs the length of the county with exits 112, 116, 117 and 121; KY 44 and KY 245 lead west toward the distilleries and Bernheim. Rideshare coverage is thin outside Louisville, so plan your last trip of the day rather than counting on a late pickup.

- Jim Beam American Stillhouse and Four Roses warehouses

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No walkable centre: budget for driving every day, and do not book a hotel expecting to stroll to dinner.
- Distillery tours and Bernheim's busy weekends can sell out or fill the lot — check hours and book ahead.
- Summer heat and humidity plus ticks in the woods at Bernheim and along the Salt River.
- Some KY 44 and Preston Highway motels are cheap for a reason; read recent reviews before booking the lowest rate.
Low street-crime risk for a US town of this size; the real hazards are interstate traffic, summer heat and alcohol on the distillery and bourbon-trail drives. Do not drink and drive — Kentucky enforces it.
