Shenyang is northeast China's largest city and the early Qing capital, with a UNESCO-listed palace and two imperial tombs that most first-time China itineraries miss. It is a 2-night stop on a Beijing–Harbin or Beijing–Dandong rail line, cold from November to March and hot and wet in July and August.

Shenyang is a low-crime city and safe to walk by day and evening. The real risks are winter cold, icy pavements, and unlicensed taxis at the stations: use the metro or a metered cab.
