Shelby
Shelby, Ohio
Give Shelby half a day: a walk through the Center Historic District and Seltzer Park. Sleep in Mansfield, 20 min southeast, and use Shelby as a stop.
Shelby is a small Richland County town of about 9,300 people on State Routes 39, 61 and 96, roughly 20 minutes northwest of Mansfield. It is a half-day stop, not a base: a compact historic downtown, a brick 1924 Catholic church, a city park, and a July bicycle festival. Most travellers see it on the way between Mansfield and the US 30 corridor, then sleep in Mansfield where the hotel and restaurant choice is far wider.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No passenger rail or intercity bus stops in Shelby: plan to drive or take a taxi/rideshare from Mansfield.
- Winter ice on OH-39 and OH-96 is the main driving risk; keep to daylight in Jan–Feb.
- Small-town hours: many downtown shops close early and on Sundays — check before you drive out.
- Alcohol is sold widely in grocery and convenience stores, but Ohio closes packaged sales after 1 am and bars at 2:30 am.
Shelby is a low-crime small town; the real risks are winter ice on OH-39/OH-96, deer on rural roads at dusk, and long drives after dark on two-lane highways. 911 covers police, fire and ambulance.
