Shaunavon
Stop for one night if you are driving Highway 13 between Swift Current and the Cypress Hills; skip it as a destination on its own.
Shaunavon is a town of about 1,700 in southwest Saskatchewan, founded in 1913 on the CPR line at the junction of Highways 13 and 37. It is a service town with a walkable downtown, a 1930 cinema and a heritage centre, and it works as a bed-and-fuel stop between Swift Current and the Cypress Hills or Grasslands national parks. There is no rail or air service; you need a car.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No passenger rail or air service: arrive by car or not at all.
- Fuel and food gaps: fill up in Swift Current, Gull Lake or Maple Creek before long rural stretches.
- Winter driving on Highways 13 and 37: snow, ice and long distances between services.
- Cell coverage thins out on the back roads; download offline maps.
Low crime and a small, quiet downtown; the real risks are rural driving, winter weather and long gaps between fuel and medical help. 911 works throughout.
