Shardlow
Give Shardlow half a day on a Derby or East Midlands stop: walk the canal wharves, eat at a wharf pub, then move on. Sleep here only if you want a quiet base.
Shardlow is a small Derbyshire village on the Trent and Mersey Canal, 6 miles (about 10 km) south-east of Derby, and the most complete surviving canal village in Britain. It was a late 18th-century inland port where goods were transferred between the River Trent and the canal. The old warehouses, wharves and pubs sit within a short walk of each other, so the visit is a couple of hours on foot, not a sightseeing day. Most travellers see it as a stop between Derby, the M1 and East Midlands Airport, or as a quiet overnight base for the area.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Most old canal buildings are private homes or businesses: view from the towpath, do not enter.
- Towpaths are uneven and can be muddy or icy; wear shoes with grip.
- Village pubs and the heritage centre keep limited, sometimes seasonal hours: check before you travel.
- Public transport is thin in the evening; plan your last bus or book a taxi.
A quiet, low-crime village; the real risks are uneven, wet towpaths, road traffic on London Road and limited evening transport. Standard UK advice applies: 999 or 112 in an emergency, 111 for NHS non-urgent.
