Shaqlawa
A half-day or one-night hill station escape from Erbil: waterfalls, mountain air and Ottoman ruins. Not a base for longer stays.
Shaqlawa is a historic hill station 51 km northeast of Erbil, sitting at 1066 m between Safeen and Sork mountains. Known for its greenery, waterfalls and temperate summers, it was a popular Iraqi resort before 2003. Today it offers a quick nature and history break: Dwin Castle, ancient churches, and mountain walks. Most visitors come for a day trip or one night.
