Shaoguan is a small Guangdong city that works as a base for red sandstone peaks at Danxiashan, a Zen pilgrimage temple at Nanhua, and forest and hot-spring country in Ruyuan. The city centre itself is thin on sights, so most travellers come for two nights and spend the days outside town. High-speed rail from Guangzhou takes about an hour.

Get around
The town centre is walkable; cross the river from the East Station and you are in it. Local buses run from the terminal beside the station to the main sights, and special express buses go to Danxiashan and Nanhua Temple from both rail stations. Taxis and ride-hailing cover the gaps; agree the fare or use the meter.

- Card and mobile payment coverage is patchy in Ruyuan villages: carry some cash.
Shaoguan is generally safe for tourists; the real risks are mountain trails in rain, long bus rides on winding roads, and language gaps outside hotels. Keep the police (110) and ambulance (120) numbers handy.
