Give Shangrila 2 nights: one for the old town and Songzanlin Monastery, one for Pudacuo. Skip it if you cannot handle 3,300 m altitude.
Shangrila (formerly Zhongdian, Tibetan Gyalthang) sits at about 3,300 m on the Yunnan-Tibet road, 1 h 20 min by train from Lijiang. It is the gateway to Deqin, Yubeng and the G214 into Tibet, and the main reason to stop is Tibetan culture plus alpine scenery — not the rebuilt old town, which is a smaller, quieter version of Lijiang.

Get around
The town runs north–south along Changzheng Road: old town at the south end, bus station at the north. City buses cost ¥2; bus 3 goes to Songzanlin Monastery. Taxis are cheap but negotiate or ask for the meter. Bicycles rent for ¥20–30 a day; check the bike and take a repair kit before you pay.

Scams and watch-outs
- Altitude: 3,300 m. Take the first day easy, drink water, and do not fly in and hike out the same day.
- The old town burned down in January 2014 and was rebuilt; expect new construction, not historic fabric.
- Napa Lake road checkpoints charge a ¥60 ticket; villagers can be firm if you refuse.
- Some old-town bike rental shops have refused repair kits and charged for flats — inspect the bike first.
- Winter nights drop well below freezing; many guesthouses have no central heating.
Low crime, real altitude. The main risks are altitude sickness on day one, icy winter roads toward Deqin, and unlicensed drivers on mountain routes — use the bus station or a hotel-arranged car.
