Seymour
One night, or a fuel-and-lunch stop on the Hume: 1 h 30 min by V/Line from Melbourne, no car needed for the town itself.
Seymour is a small rail town on the Goulburn River, about 100 km north of Melbourne on the Hume Freeway, and the junction where the Seymour, Albury and Shepparton V/Line lines meet. It is a practical stop between Melbourne and the High Country or Albury rather than a destination in itself: a rail heritage centre, a war memorial walk, a handful of wineries and a main street. Most travellers give it one night or a lunch break, then continue north.

Get around
The town centre is flat and small enough to walk in 15–20 minutes end to end. V/Line trains connect Seymour with Melbourne, Albury-Wodonga and Shepparton; myki is valid on services from Melbourne, but Albury-line seats are usually reserved in advance and you cannot reserve a seat if you are only going as far as Seymour. A car is needed for the wineries and the surrounding Goulburn Valley.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Albury-line trains from Melbourne often sell out: you may stand the whole way, and you cannot book a seat for a Seymour stop.
- Summer days can reach the high 30s °C and winter nights drop below zero: check the forecast before a river walk.
- The Hume Freeway bypasses the town: if you are driving, take the Seymour exit rather than expecting services on the highway.
- Small-town opening hours: many cafés and the wineries close early or on set days, so check before you build a day around them.
A quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are highway driving, summer heat on river walks and long gaps between trains if you miss the last service.
