Sewanee
Give Sewanee one full day and one night: walk the University of the South campus, drive to Green's View and University View, then leave for Monteagle or Cowan.
Sewanee is a small Cumberland Plateau town built around the University of the South, roughly halfway between Nashville and Chattanooga. Almost everything visitors come for — pink-sandstone Gothic campus buildings, cliff-edge overlooks, hiking and camping on the university's 13,000-acre Domain — is free and open year-round. One night covers the town; two nights if you want a full hiking day.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter brings dense fog, ice and occasional snow on the plateau: camping is not advisable then.
- Some climbing areas and caves are genuinely dangerous; do not enter caves without a guide.
- Many trails have steep drops and are not rideable; ask locally before biking a route.
- Peak weekends (homecoming, commencement, parents' weekend) fill the few rooms in town months ahead.
Sewanee is a small, low-crime college town and feels safe on foot day and night. The real risks are on the plateau: fog and ice in winter, steep trail edges, and unmarked cave entrances.
