Sequim

Give Sequim 1–2 nights as a sunny base on the Olympic Peninsula: lavender farms and the Dungeness Spit, with a car.

Sequim sits in the Olympic rain shadow, so it is drier and sunnier than Port Angeles or Forks. The town itself is small and walkable in under an hour, but the lavender farms, the Dungeness Spit and the wildlife refuge sit on the outskirts, so a car or a bike decides how much you see. Most travellers use it as a 1–2 night base between Port Angeles and Port Townsend.

Get around

A car is the practical choice: the town core is walkable but the lavender farms, Dungeness refuge and game farm are spread along US-101 and the Sequim–Dungeness Way. Clallam Transit Route 30 links the Sequim Transit Center with Port Angeles ($1), and Jefferson Transit Route 8 runs to Port Townsend ($1.50). Bikes and e-bikes can be rented in town, and the paved Olympic Discovery Trail passes through.

Scams and watch-outs

  • Distances between sights are longer than they look on a map; without a car you see very little.
  • Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge charges a small entry fee per family and closes a half hour before sunset.
  • The Spit walk to the lighthouse is about 5 mi each way with no shade or water; go at low tide and carry layers.
  • Summer lavender weekends fill motels in the valley; book ahead for mid-July.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the Spit and in the Buckhorn Wilderness.

Sequim is a low-crime small town and generally safe for visitors. The real risks are driving US-101 at dusk (deer), the exposed Spit walk, and summer heat with no shade on the beach.
