Sept-Îles
Go for 2 nights if you are already on the North Shore or taking the Bella Desgagnés; skip the flight from Montreal unless the fare drops well under C$800 return.
Sept-Îles is the largest town on Quebec's North Shore, about 638 km and 7–8 hours by car from Quebec City on Route 138. It is a working port and aluminium town, not a resort: the reasons to come are the Innu cultural sites, the beaches and the boat or train links further north and east. Two nights covers the town; the airport fare is the main reason most travellers skip it.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Mobile coverage is limited: Bell/Telus get 3G in town, little or nothing outside it. Download offline maps.
- Winter is severe: snow from November to April, and waiting outdoors at −30 °C is dangerous.
- Alouette smelter tours ban pacemakers, pregnant women, under-12s, cameras, watches and jewellery; long sleeves, long trousers and closed flat shoes are required.
- The train to Schefferville is an isolated line with no connection to the rest of the Canadian network; book and plan onward transport at Emeril Junction in advance.
- Relais Nordik sailings are weekly and weather-dependent: the operator advises booking onward connections 36–48 hours after scheduled arrival.
A small, safe town; the real risks are the cold, the distance between services and patchy mobile coverage. Tell someone your route if you drive Route 138 outside town.
