Sendai
仙台
Give Sendai two nights as a Tohoku base: 90 min from Tokyo by Shinkansen, cheaper than Kyoto, and Matsushima is 40 min away.
Sendai is the largest city in Tohoku and the capital of Miyagi, about 1 million people, 90 minutes from Tokyo on the Tohoku Shinkansen. The centre was flattened in the war, so this is a green, walkable modern city rather than a temple town: covered arcades, a castle ruin on a hill, and easy day trips to the coast at Matsushima and Ishinomaki. Most travellers use it as a two-night base for Miyagi, not as a destination in itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Loople Sendai buses are small and crowded at weekends and in summer, and the last loop is before 17:00.
- Some buses run only every 30 min outside the centre; check timetables before you commit.
- The Miyagi Museum of Art and Sendai City Museum have been closed for renovation at times: check the official sites.
- Typhoon season brings heavy rainstorms in late summer and autumn; build a wet-day plan.
One of Japan's safer big cities, including for solo and late-evening travel. The real risks are summer humidity, heavy rain in typhoon season, and infrequent buses outside the centre: check the last service before you go out.
