Go as a half-day to one-day stop from Maibara or Nagoya, not as a base: walk the battlefield sites from Sekigahara Station and leave the same day.
Sekigahara is a rural town of about 6,700 people in western Gifu, built around the site of the October 1600 battle that ended the Sengoku period and started the Tokugawa shogunate. The battlefield, memorials and two museums sit within a 20-30 minute walk of the station, so most travellers see it in a few hours and sleep in Maibara, Nagoya or Kyoto.

Get around
Walk. Everything in town is within 20-30 minutes of Sekigahara Station, and the battlefield loop takes about a day on foot. Bicycles can be rented at the tourist centre opposite the station or at the memorial museum; some trails are stepped and bikes must be pushed. The town Fureai Bus runs five rotating routes three times a day and is not useful for a short visit. No public buses enter the town.

Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings

- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Sekigahara Station is unstaffed: no shops, no left luggage beyond what you carry, only vending machines and toilets.
- English is limited outside the museums; signs at the memorial posts are mostly Japanese, with English on the adjacent historic markers.
- Some encampment sites sit on hills with steep, stepped trails; wear shoes you can climb in.
- The tourist information centre closes Tuesdays and the day after a public holiday.
- School groups fill the museum and main sites in term time; go early to walk the field in quiet.
Very safe. The real risks are steep, stepped trails on the encampment hills, summer heat with little shade on the field, and a near-empty station after the last train: check the timetable before you start the far sites.
