Seixal
Skip as a base: Seixal is a Lisbon commuter town on the south bank. Come for one half-day (bay walk, tidal mill, river beach) or the Avante! festival.
Seixal sits on the Tagus bay across from Lisbon, reached by Fertagus train to Fogueteiro or Corroios, or by the Cais do Sodré ferry. Its draw is the river: a tidal mill at Corroios, the Quinta da Fidalga estate where the Gama brothers fitted ships for India, a river beach at Ponta dos Corvos, and a flat bay-side bike path linking Seixal, Arrentela and Amora. Most travellers see it in half a day from Lisbon; the town works as a cheap sleep only if you have a car or want the Avante! festival.
