Seinäjoki
Give Seinäjoki one night, two if you want the Aalto buildings plus a tango or festival night: the centre is walkable in half a day.
Seinäjoki is the capital of Southern Ostrobothnia and a five-way rail junction, about 3 h from Helsinki and 1 h from Tampere by train. Its draw is compact: six Alvar Aalto buildings around one square, a 65 m church tower you can ride up, and Finland's biggest tango festival each July. Most travellers pass through on the way north or west, and one night covers the centre on foot.
