Seddon
Stop for one night on the SH1 run between Picton and Kaikoura, or skip: Seddon is a vineyard village with a café, a camp and no sights of its own.
Seddon sits on State Highway 1 near the mouth of the Awatere River, 15 minutes south of Blenheim and about 1 h 15 min north of Kaikoura. Sheep country turned vineyard: the dry hills around town are now mostly grapes. There is one café-bar, one motor camp and a coast road through the vines. It works as a cheap, quiet night between the ferry and Kaikoura, or as a base for the Molesworth Station back road.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- Almost nothing is open late: eat before the café-bar closes or drive to Blenheim.
- Fuel up in Blenheim or Ward before the Molesworth/Acheron Road: no fuel or shop for 197 km to Hanmer Springs.
- The Acheron Road is open only in the warmer months, roughly from the Saturday before Labour Day (fourth Monday of October) to Easter Monday, 07:00–19:00, and can close at any time for weather, fire risk or road condition. Check the DOC page before you commit.
- One-lane bridges on SH1 and gravel roads off it; keep left and watch for logging and stock trucks.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the coast road and gone on the Molesworth route.
Very safe. The real risks are the SH1 drive (fatigue, one-lane bridges, trucks), unsealed vineyard and coast roads, and the Molesworth route where a breakdown or a closed gate leaves you a long way from help.
