Sebastian
Sebastian, Florida
Give Sebastian one full day plus a night: Sebastian Inlet State Park in the morning, Pelican Island or the riverfront in the afternoon. Skip it as a base unless you fish or surf.
Sebastian is a small Indian River town on Florida's Treasure Coast, about halfway between Melbourne and Vero Beach. Its pull is water, not streets: Sebastian Inlet State Park on the barrier island, Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge offshore, and the St. Sebastian River Preserve inland. Two nights is plenty; anglers and surfers stay longer.

Get around
A car is close to essential: sights sit 10–20 min apart along US-1 and A1A, and there is no useful local bus for visitors. I-95 exit 156 and US-1 are the two main approaches. Bicycles work on the riverfront and inside the state parks; rideshare exists but is thin outside town.
See and do
Known for
- Sebastian Inlet State Park
- Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge
- Indian River Lagoon fishing

- Motels and the riverfront resort strip; walkable to restaurants and the water, 5–10 min drive to the inlet.

- Camping and beach access inside the state park; nothing else within walking distance, so you need a car.
- Long Point and the lagoon
- Campground and boat access on the Indian River Lagoon; quiet, car-dependent.
Language
English everywhere, with strong regional accents; Spanish is the second language in the Southwest, Texas, Florida, California and New York. Some words differ from British English: restroom (toilet), check (bill), gas (petrol), trunk (boot), first floor (ground floor).
- Measurements are imperial: miles, Fahrenheit, gallons, pounds. 100 km ≈ 62 miles; 30 °C ≈ 86 °F.
- Small talk with strangers is normal and friendly; it is not a sales tactic.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; check storm forecasts before booking a coastal stay in late summer.
- Sebastian Inlet State Park charges a per-vehicle day fee and can fill its lot on summer weekends and holidays: arrive before mid-morning.
- Swim near lifeguarded areas only; the inlet has strong tidal current.
- Sun and heat are the everyday risks — water, shade and sunscreen, especially Jun–Sep.
A low-crime small town; the real risks are water and weather — rip currents at the inlet, summer heat and storms, and hurricane season from June to November.
