Seattle in July: what to expect

July is the payoff for Seattle's grey reputation. The Pacific high settles in, the rain machine switches off, and the city gets its clearest skies of the year. Daytime highs sit around 24 °C (75 °F) with lows near 14 °C (57 °F), and most days are dry — a handful of light rain days at most, usually short. Humidity stays low, so 24 °C feels like 24 °C.

The catch is that the same high keeps mornings cool and can bring a marine layer of low cloud over Puget Sound that burns off by mid-morning. Evenings cool down fast after sunset; a light jacket is worth carrying. Wildfire smoke from inland Washington and British Columbia can drift over the city in late July and August, cutting visibility and air quality for a few days — check the air quality index before planning a long hike or a ferry ride with a view.

July is peak season in Seattle, and the numbers show it. Hotel rates run at their yearly high, especially around the 4 July weekend and any weekend with a stadium event or a cruise-ship turnaround at Pier 66 or Pier 91. Downtown and Belltown rooms are the first to sell out; airport-area hotels in SeaTac and Tukwila stay cheaper and are 20–35 minutes away on the light rail.

Crowds concentrate in a few places: Pike Place Market mid-morning, the Space Needle and Chihuly Garden midday, the ferries to Bainbridge and Bremerton on sunny afternoons, and Mount Rainier's Paradise and Sunrise areas on weekends. Shift your timing — Pike Place before 09:00, the Needle at opening, ferries as a foot passenger on a weekday morning — and July feels far less packed.

Book ferries and any timed-entry attraction as soon as your dates are fixed. Washington State Ferries take vehicles on a first-come basis with long summer waits at Edmonds, Mukilteo and Anacortes; walk-on passengers rarely wait more than one sailing.

July is Seattle's festival month, with the biggest events clustered around the 4 July weekend and the third week.

Dates move year to year, so confirm each one before you build a trip around it.

July opens the mountain season. Mount Rainier's wildflower meadows peak from mid-July into early August, and the Sunrise and Paradise roads are clear; go on a weekday and start early. The North Cascades Highway is open and the alpine trails along it are at their best. Olympic National Park's Hoh rainforest and the Hurricane Ridge road are both fully accessible.

In the city, July is the month for the water. Take a walk-on ferry to Bainbridge Island for lunch, kayak on Lake Union or the Arboretum, or ride the water taxi to Alki Beach. Discovery Park, Golden Gardens and the Ballard Locks are all at their best. Day trips to the San Juan Islands, Leavenworth or the Columbia River Gorge are easy in long daylight — you can be back after dark.

Ferry to Bainbridge or Bremerton: walk on, no reservation needed on most sailings; drive on and you may wait a sailing or two on a sunny weekend. The Bainbridge crossing is about 35 minutes, Bremerton about 60. Check current schedules and fares with Washington State Ferries; a 2026 estimate for a walk-on round trip is about $10–11, cars much more (check).

City parks and beaches: warm, dry and light until about 21:00, so Alki and Golden Gardens fill on weekends.

Pack for warm days and cool evenings: short sleeves and light trousers for the afternoon, plus a light jacket or fleece for after sunset and for the ferry deck, where the wind off Puget Sound is cold even in July.

Add sunglasses, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle. Bring broken-in shoes for Rainier or the Cascades, and a rain shell if you are heading to the coast or the rainforest, where July is wetter than the city. If smoke is forecast, pack an N95 mask and keep indoor alternatives ready.

June is cooler and can still be cloudy, but it is quieter and cheaper and the mountains are opening. August is nearly as dry and sunny as July, slightly warmer, with more wildfire-smoke risk and the same peak prices. September is the sweet spot for many: the rain returns late in the month, crowds thin after Labor Day, and the mountains stay open.
